Kanonkop means "Cannon Head", and is derived from the days when cannons were fired to signal the arrival of Dutch trade ships into Cape Town Harbour. The legendary Wines of Kanonkop have consistently been at the forefront of premium South African winemaking since 1973. Located on the foothills of the Simonsberg mountain in Stellenbosch, Kanonkop is widely respected for their traditional approach to producing classic, elegant wines made from Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Kanonkop’s Pinotage vines were planted in 1941, well before Kanonkop existed. These vines are grown as bush vines, unirrigated, in 8 different plots, making these Pinotage vines amongst the oldest, if not the oldest in the world. In 2018, Kanonkop became the 1st South African Wine Estate to achieve 100 points for a wine by respected British wine judge, journalist and critic Tim Atkin MW - being awarded to the 2015 Kanonkop Paul Sauer Bordeaux Blend.
